In 2013, my life took a dramatic turn, when I became a Caregiver for an extraordinary woman I call my mother. Her married name was Karolina Andrejczuk (nee Pankewycz). She came into this world on February 20,1924 and her story isn’t one of glamour or fluff. It’s about courage, strength, and having the ability to Love through all adversity and pain. Karolina Andrejczuk is not a household name, or in the public eye, but her ability to succeed and overcome, deserves similar recognition. The name Karolina Andrejczuk will forever be engraved on my heart for her love and commitment to her Family. She is, in every sense of the word, a Survivor. Her life is not an easy one, it rarely was. It is a hard one, but she always and unconditionally strives and manages to make it a good one. She does not allow herself to feel entrapped or enslaved by life’s challenges. She is my idol. My first love. Karolina may be a simple folk to many, but to me she is a true heroine. “A true hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart.” – Hercules

This book truly touches your heart. If you are having your ups and downs taking care of an elderly member in your family, this book will give you tools that will inspire you. Even if you are not a caregiver, it is still a great read that helps you better understand the struggle of the elderly, the struggle of dementia and how family members can help.
I have known Irene for many years, and have met few people who can maintain their love and compassion for an aging parent suffering the mental shift as only dementia, Alzheimer’s and mental illness can bring. Having an aging parent whose need for care was stilted by her own drive for independence along with paranoia and other mental illness challenges, I understand what it takes to advocate for someone unable to do so for themselves. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is either in the midst of this challenge or can foresee this happening in their not so distant future. Caring for someone you love, is challenging enough without doing it alone. With this book you can connect with others who understand what you may be going through. Warmly and with gratitude,
Caregiving: A Journey of the Heart, Stories to Feed the Spirit and Nourish the Soul is a very unique book written to help adults see the ups and downs and the struggles that come with care-giving. With compelling stories for caregivers, loved ones and their families, Irene has written and compiled a book that is a delightful read with important information for those who want to understand what care-givers go through while taking care of a loved one.
A few years ago, over coffee, Irene and I spoke about her excitement to share her story of care-giving with the world. I was delighted for her and for all the caregivers who would benefit from her experience! Today, through this anthology, Irene reaches out to touch your heart, to tell you that you are not alone in your struggle, and to energize you through the expression of love for her mother.
Irene’s immense compassion and dedication for her mother is so beautifully expressed in her compelling writing. I have the utmost respect for her ability to tell her story in such a heartfelt and yet impactful way. You are sure to be moved by the stories in this book and benefit immensely from the advice from people who truly understand what unconditional love really means.
Irene takes us on her journey as her Mom’s primary care-giver. This is a must read for anyone going through the same thing to help gain a deep understanding of how an aging parent feels and what they are go through as they lose their independence and autonomy. How Irene handles it all, from a distance, is incredibly inspiring and heart-warming!
Irene’s book is a wake-up call to remind us that the main reason we are on this planet is to take care of each other. It is also a reminder that there is nothing that will make us more of human beings than caregiving.
