What Story is Your Hair Telling

Have you ever heard of a hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA)? I am going to share with you some pertinent information regarding HTMA, as many have never heard of it or why it would be beneficial.

The first time I tried a hair tissue mineral analysis, I was a HUGE skeptic. Let it be known that I’m no stranger to having my hair permed, colored, tinted, or hi-lited in my twenties, not knowing that the treatments and chemicals were doing more harm than good.

Fast forward to today. As a Naturopath, one of the principles I adhere to is: “First Do No Harm.” So I would never recommend this to anyone if I believed they could not benefit from it. There are many other tools I can use in my arsenal to help you achieve optimal health.

By using hair analysis, the results gave me an overall glimpse of what was going on inside my body. I could actually see the mineral deficiencies and imbalances I needed to address. No more guessing or assuming! Once I knew what my deficiencies and imbalances were, I was able to target them with a specific plan and see another 15-20% improvement fairly quickly. HTMA is a true science.

Because of my training to become a Naturopath, I decided to study hair analysis myself and now use it in my own practice—another service I am so delighted to offer my clients. I invite you to check a list of all my services and how they can help you here.

A HTMA can provide a unique snapshot into your body, showing you where you are on the energy continuum while assessing your mineral status. A Hair Analysis can also detect imbalances sooner than blood tests identify them and show you early trends towards health problems.

I see hair analysis as a prevention tool of the future, examining and correcting mineral levels as an early line of defense against disease.

So, how do mineral imbalances occur? The answer: diet, medications, stress, environment/pollution, heredity/genetics, and nutritional supplements.

Were you aware that by taking one mineral supplement (without the advice of a healthcare professional) can have a cascading effect on other minerals? Hair analysis can help to bring your mineral levels back in balance.

Here’s my list of what I believe to be the 5 most important things (“secrets”) a hair analysis can tell you.

A HTMA:

1) assesses the accumulation of toxic heavy metals like mercury, lead, aluminum  uranium, arsenic, beryllium, and cadmium.

Are you a vegetarian who eats a lot of fish and could be taking in higher levels of mercury? Or could your tap water have unhealthy levels of arsenic or lead? Hair analysis can also provide a screening of your home environment by showing you toxins you might have exposure to.

2) tests for 36 elements and provides you with a comprehensive report of findings

Hair analysis tests for the following elements: calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, copper, zinc, phosphorus, iron, manganese, chromium, selenium, boron, cobalt, germanium, molybdenum, sulfur, uranium, arsenic, beryllium, mercury, cadmium, lead, aluminum, barium, bismuth, rubidium, lithium, nickel, platinum, thallium, vanadium, strontium, tin, titanium, tungsten, and zirconium.

3) tells you if you have thyroid or adrenal insufficiency

By assessing the ratio of your calcium to potassium levels, you can see how well your thyroid hormones are doing their job.

If your thyroid hormones haven’t been doing their job well for some time, you may know about it by experiencing unfavorable symptoms like: constipation, cold sensitivity, low energy, and depression, to name a few.

Examining your sodium to magnesium ratio can show you how much adrenal stress you are experiencing.

I help you make supplemental adjustments to bring the ratio into better balance, supporting healthy thyroid and adrenal function.

4) shows you what supplements you should actually take to help balance your own minerals, so you can stop taking stuff you don’t really need

That’s where I come in. I provide you with a custom treatment plan for you, and nobody else. Your results may reveal that you’re spending money on supplements, a bunch of extra stuff that you don’t need. Your hair analysis would indicate what you need to prevent further imbalances.

5) tells you what your metabolic type is

Do you know if you are a fast oxidizer (fast metabolic type) or a slow oxidizer (slow metabolic type)? Do you know what you can do to balance your metabolic

type with food and high quality supplements?

By knowing your metabolic type you learn where your body is currently at, and what nutrients can be therapeutic to steering your body in a better direction.

The report that accompanies your HTMA results tells you your metabolic type, information for understanding your mineral levels and your mineral ratios, plus critical details about any toxic metal levels that are present in your hair.

I just help you make sense of it and provide you with a better understanding how diet and lifestyle are impacting your health, and how you can commit to making real change.

I am the type of practitioner that wants my clients to understand the why behind what they are doing with their protocol. I am a naturopath but also an educator, as I believe understanding and education empowers long-term change and compliance. My goal is to deliver the educational understanding that fuels change and gets results.
